Grocery and pharmacy retail is the natural home of loyalty: high frequency, thin margins, and a customer who visits weekly. It is also the hardest sector to get right, because the program lives or dies at a till where the cashier has eight seconds per customer.
Here is how we build retail loyalty that actually runs.
The retail loyalty economics
A supermarket does not fund loyalty from its own margin alone. It funds it from three pools:
- Own margin — typically 0.5% to 1.5% of spend.
- Supplier-funded offers — brands pay for targeted promotions to your members. This becomes your most profitable line.
- Media monetisation — retail media, where suppliers pay to reach your member segments in-app, on shelf and in email.
Point three is the single biggest change in MENA retail since 2023. A loyalty database of 500,000 active members is a retail media network waiting to be switched on, and it can pay for the entire program.
Capture at the till: the make-or-break detail
| Capture method | Speed | Match rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone number keyed by cashier | Slow | High | Works, but adds 6–10 seconds |
| Member QR in app | Fast | High | Requires app adoption |
| Card / payment token linkage | Instant | Very high | Best-in-class; needs acquirer cooperation |
| Loyalty barcode on receipt | Fast | Medium | Good bridge during rollout |
Segmentation that grows basket
Once transactions are identified, four segments produce most of the incremental margin:
- Lapsing weekly shoppers — customers whose visit gap has stretched from 7 to 14 days. The cheapest revenue in retail.
- Single-category shoppers — buy only dry goods; a targeted fresh or chilled offer moves them into a bigger basket.
- Big-basket, low-frequency — the monthly stock-up shopper who can be nudged to a mid-month top-up trip.
- Private-label rejectors — high-value members who never buy own-brand; a funded trial changes lifetime margin.

Ramadan and seasonality
In Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Ramadan alone can represent 25–35% of annual grocery volume. A loyalty program should treat it as a distinct campaign season:
- Pre-Ramadan double points on staples to lock in the stock-up trip
- Mid-Ramadan burn campaign to convert points into fresh and premium categories
- Eid gifting rewards to extend the season
- Back-to-school and White Friday as the two other anchor moments
Pharmacy and multi-category variations
Pharmacy chains carry a regulatory constraint: prescription items generally cannot be incentivised. We ring-fence eligible SKUs at the rules layer so the program never earns on restricted lines, while still rewarding beauty, baby care, supplements and OTC categories that drive the real margin.
What EKO delivers for retailers
- Reward economics modelled by category with supplier co-funding built in
- POS and ERP integration scoped with your IT team, not around them
- Cashier training kits and till-side incentives — the step most vendors ignore
- Bilingual member app or mobile web area with Arabic-first RTL design
- Weekly segment campaigns over WhatsApp, SMS and push
- Retail media readiness so suppliers can buy your member audiences
We have run retail and FMCG campaigns across Egypt and the Gulf for over a decade, which means we design programs around how a hypermarket, a mini-market chain and a pharmacy group actually operate — different POS realities, different staff turnover, different supplier relationships.
